VISIT FLORIDA Encourages Americans to Take Their Earned Time Off

By on August 4th, 2015 — 4:49pm

As summer winds down, I hope you’ve been able to take some time off to rest, relax and unplug. Unfortunately, Americans are taking less vacation today than at any point in the last 40 years.  Last year alone, 429 million earned vacation days went unused.  This startling statistic is not good for Americans workers or the Florida tourism industry.

To combat this trend, the U.S. Travel Association is leading the charge to shift American culture so that using personal time off is not considered frivolous, but essential to strengthening families and improving personal health.  Project: Time Off is an initiative to prove the personal, business, social and economic benefits that taking earned time off can deliver.

VISIT FLORIDA is proud to support the effort by signing up as a founding partner of the Project: Time Off Coalition.  This broad-based group of organizations is committed to changing the thinking and behavior of Americans about their vacation time.  As part of a national movement, coalition members understand that putting our wasted days to use will not only help Americans improve their health, happiness and careers, it will also provide a $160 billion boost to the economy.

According to U.S. Travel President and CEO Roger Dow, “Unused days off translate to overworked Americans who are stressed, unhappy and less productive at home and at work.  Changing the mindset and behavior of our overwhelmed culture isn’t just a boon for the economy; it’s the right thing to do.”

As representatives of the Florida tourism industry, I ask you to lead by example.  Take a vacation and encourage your employees to do the same.  It’s good for the soul, good for your business and good for the Florida economy.
