It’s that time of year again! Nominations are now open for the Florida Tourism Hall of Fame. Begun in 2001, the Florida Tourism Hall of Fame acknowledges contemporary and historic figures whose vision, creativity and drive have had a positive and significant impact on the development of Florida as a desirable visitor destination. Each year, one Hall of Fame inductee will be selected by the Florida Council of Tourism Leaders from among the nominations received, approved by the VISIT FLORIDA Board of Directors and then formally recognized during the Florida Governor’s Conference on Tourism. Today, Senate Bill 398 establishing a permanent home for the Florida Tourism Hall of Fame at the State Capitol was signed into law by Governor Rick Scott. A huge thank you to the bill’s sponsor Sen. Detert, co-sponsor Sen. Margolis, along with the members of the Senate Commerce & Tourism Committee, as well as Rep. La Rosa who put forward the companion bill in the House. Continue reading »

Today the Florida tourism industry mourns the passing of one of our Founding Fathers. Tom Staed served as VISIT FLORIDA’s chairman of the board of directors in 1997-1998 and was inducted into the Florida Tourism Hall of Fame Founders Club in 2001 and the Florida Council of Tourism Leaders in 2012. Tom, a longtime Daytona Beach hotel operator, was a vital figure in the establishment of Florida’s Tourist Development Tax, as well as the assignment of the state’s tourism marketing responsibility to the Florida Commission on Tourism and the creation of VISIT FLORIDA as its operating company.
