In the first 6 months of 2015, the Florida tourism industry welcomed over 54 million visitors to the Sunshine State, putting us on pace to surpass Governor Scott’s goal of 100 million visitors and on target for a fifth consecutive record year. Given these figures, one might assume that we would continue to employ the same strategies that have worked well for the last five years. Happy New Year! The Florida tourism industry kicks off the new fiscal year with a tremendous amount of momentum. Record visitors, record spending and record hospitality industry jobs. I would like to thank Governor Scott and the entire Florida Legislature for their recognition of the economic impact Florida’s tourism industry brings to the state and their continuing support of public funding for VISIT FLORIDA’s marketing efforts. As part of Florida Tourism Day at the Capitol, a group of former Florida Tourism Hall of Fame inductees, VISIT FLORIDA Board members and Florida Council of Tourism Leaders was on hand for the official unveiling of the new Florida Tourism Hall of Fame display at the Florida Capitol. The event, which was held at the Official Capitol Welcome Center, marked the culmination of a project by the Florida Council of Tourism Leaders to relocate the Hall of Fame from VISIT FLORIDA’s headquarters to a more widely-accessible display in the Capitol building. I am proud to announce that Bill Waichulis was officially confirmed as a member of VISIT FLORIDA’s Board of Directors during yesterday’s Enterprise Florida board meeting. Having already been approved by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, Bill will fill a regional seat representing the eight counties of Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Glades, Hardee, Hendry, Highlands, and Lee.
