Two Million Viewers Discover Florida’s First Thanksgiving

By on November 23rd, 2011 — 9:48am

Tomorrow morning, millions of Americans will watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the first of several treasured Thanksgiving rituals.  On the same day, more than two million Americans of Latino heritage also will be watching TV, hearing stories of Jamestown and Plymouth … and of another Thanksgiving 56 years previous, in St. Augustine.

VISIT FLORIDA reached out to Univision, and as a result, Thanksgiving Day’s morning news show Despierta América will bring Spanish-speaking audiences in the United States a 500-year-old story: the European discovery of Florida.

The 7:00-10:30 a.m. broadcast also will report on:

  • VISIT FLORIDA’s newly launched VIVAFLORIDA.org website, a celebration of the state’s many cultures with reporting in Spanish and English.
  • Mi Sol Es Tu Sol, VISIT FLORIDA’s Spanish-language Share a Little Sunshine platform on Facebook.  Through this site, visitors can download a Thanksgiving e-card, which recognizes that meal of thanks 500 years ago in North Florida between Spanish Explorers and Timucuan Indians.

The 2013 quincentennial is an opportunity to remind all Americans that Florida has long-been a destination of choice for the world and is especially relevant as a destination for domestic Hispanic audiences, an important part of Florida’s tourism future.

BY THE NUMBERS:

  • 15% – Hispanics as a percentage of the U.S. population
  • 66% – The expected growth rate of the Hispanic market over the next five years (compared to 52% for the general U.S. population)
  • 10 – How many years younger, on average, Hispanics are than the general U.S. population
  • 53% – The percentage of Hispanic households that have children (compared to 34%  of the general U.S. population)
  • 22.5% – The percentage of Florida residents that are Hispanic, creating a strong opportunity for marketing in-state and Visiting Friends and Relatives travel to this growing demographic
